After some silly experimentation, Jay falls for Catherine (Lia Johnson). The rules of romantic comedy dictate that the answer is “yes” — but also “no.” “I’m Through With White Girls” has a fluid comfort with its brassy ideas about dating and race.He first sees the up-and-coming novelist at a club. And it’s clearly pitched at those moviegoers who aren’t thrown even a jot by the race-tweaking title.“You know black girls don’t like me,” Jay tells Matt early in the film.
Guests were treated to BBQ following the screening. Jay is a poseur in the way only a 20-something can be. In the hipster romantic comedy “I’m Through With White Girls (The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks),” the women of the title are a conga line of smarties who appear in the credit sequence reading “Dear Jane” missives from Jay (Anthony Montgomery).Oprah Winfrey and the cast of OWN’s new original drama, “Greenleaf,” hit the green carpet for the show’s L. premiere on Wednesday at The Lot in West Hollywood.Stars Lynn Whitfield, Keith David, Merle Dandridge and Lamman Rucker met Winfrey and creator Craig Wright to discuss how they brought the show to life.“Greenleaf” follows an African-American family who runs a megachurch and the trials that tear them apart.
Winfrey, who in addition to playing Mavis Mc Cready is an executive producer, said a key part in producing the series was ensuring that it was an authentic reflection of the black church. “I’ve also had that moment where Grace is saying out loud, ‘I swear to God.’ I was a little girl once and I said that.We need to continue amplify these positive images of black women rising above inequality to become leaders in their field!Lamman Rucker has had a busy month in a very busy year, but not too busy to come home to Pittsburgh and celebrate the birthday of a man he recalls as “Uncle Auggie.” The 44-year-old actor, son of drummer Eric Rucker and whose mother, Malaya, worked with the Pittsburgh Black Theater Dance Ensemble, were part of the African-American creative community that included the late playwright August Wilson, who would have been 71 on April 27. Rucker has forged a stage and Hollywood career that most recently includes the premiere of the OWN TV series “Greenleaf” last week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.He breaks up with each of them by scribbled letter.OK, that’s better than Jack Berger’s Post-it to Carrie Bradshaw, but barely. As only a “post-race” movie can be, this one is a lot about ethnicity and difference, but also similarity and connection. Sure, it’s a comedy, but the down-home foibles of Drake’s family teeter on familiar buffoonery. C.’s stridency would have been just as true dialed down a notch. A modest indie that has had success on the film-fest circuit, “I’m Through With White Girls” has some bumps. Directed by Jennifer Sharp; written by Courtney Lilly; photography by Jacob Pinger; starring Anthony Montgomery, Lia Johnson, Ryan Alosio, Kellee Stewart, Lamman Rucker, Aliana Reed Hall.
